Fleshmarket Close, Edinbugh, Scotland
Fleshmarket Close was built in 1855-60 and runs between High and Market Streets and is cut through by Cockburn Street in Old Town Edinburgh, Scotland. A "close" (pronounced ‘kloss') is a narrow alleyway, just wide enough for several people, situated beneath the ancient high stone tenements. The poor were residents of the closes where lack of daylight and fresh air marked their existence. Since there was no sanitation, all water would need to be collected at street level and carried up many flights of stairs. They were known for their stench as contents of chamber pots were flung into the close to be collected for manure or washed by rain into the Nor’ Loch which was situated below the hill. The Fleshmarket Close would have stunk more than most as it was known for its flesh merchants, or butchers, operating at ground-level. Offal, blood and flies would have been common within the narrow confines of the close.
